What does it take to be a hero?
Is it bravery that inspires weak
hearts in the midst of frailty?
Is it courage that dares to stare
in the eyes of evil and adversity?
Is it selflessness that gives its own
breath so others can have theirs?
Who can be called a hero?
The soldier,
laying on the battlefield,
freedom?
The firefighter,
running back inside
braving the flames,
in search for survivors?
The teacher,
walking with students
until the victory of literacy
gives opportunity to learn?
The parents,
consistently loving their child
who grows up knowing
they have purpose?
The social worker,
volunteering time with the poor,
who now have one person
to share a smile with?
What does it take to be a hero?
