Sunset 3/23/03
It happened today
while on my way
to mail this very letter.
With a furious spur
of my pedaled stallion
I crested the hill,
breaching the line
that separates the space
occupied by shadow’s will,
refusing to give in
to the offensive light,
and the space
already taken by it.
A glance to my left
halted my 2-wheeled steed.
I remember a burning desire
for a camera,
and, that desire
branded the image
as a souvenir
on my film of recollection.
A field of heady grass
lit by setting sun
was the spectacle,
but it really was
a mass of adoring life,
bowing and rising in thanks
to their life-giving friend,
waving to their faithful companion
knowing he would be back
as he went home for the night
and turned off the lights.
